Research Interest:

The main research interest of my laboratory is to understand how complex growth and developmental programs are controlled in response to diverse internal and environmental stimuli in multicellular organisms, which represent some of the most ancient and universal questions in biology. Specifically, we chose to delineate the multifaceted functions of target of rapamycin (TOR) as our major research projects. TOR kinase is an evolutionarily conserved master regulator that integrates nutrients and energy signaling to promote cell proliferation and growth. My laboratory plans to explore novel paradigms for the multifaceted TOR signaling links by uncovering the physiological functions of diverse TOR kinase phosphorylation targets focusing on transcriptional reprogramming in stem/progenitor cell proliferation and metabolic control. Given the novel TOR signaling mechanisms we have discovered in Arabidopsis and the remarkable conservation of this ancient “growth hub”, the proposed studies may illuminate unexplored functions of TOR in both plants and animals, and ultimately offer new possibilities for agricultural improvement and disease therapy.
